Macassar
ebony logs await resawing at our warehouse, above. Right, close-up of log ends showing the marbling typical of good Macassar ebony.

There's
considerable variation in the appearance of Macassar ebony, from
the predominately lighter background material as in the Breedlove guitar
at the top, to the inverse effect of a dark background with light
striping as in the image at above. |
However, there are ebonies sold as Macassar ebony
which are not true Macassar ebony. One, which is on the market and
is sold as striped ebony is from Papua-New Guinea and is known as
Morola. Although attractive, it does |
not have
the stability nor the density of Macassar (.65 to .75 vs. Macassar's
.95 to 1.2). This wood is also not as easy to bend, nor does it glue
as well as Macassar. |
